The Shreveport Art Club was founded in 1921 by several important and
nationally known artists for the purpose of holding art classes. The members
worked together once a week with a paid teacher. The first president was the
late Amos Lee Armstrong. Through the early years the members increased in
number, had several different teachers, and brought numerous exhibitors from out
of town, as well as sponsoring local exhibits.
Currently, the Shreveport Art Club meets on the first Monday of each month, with
the exception of July and August. Meetings are held at the Barnwell Garden and
Art Center at 10:30 on meeting days. A volunteer board of eight officers and
five committee chairmen govern the activities of the club, incorporated in 1956.
Each program consists of a demonstration or talk by a member or guest artist.
Members may bring artwork for an “Art of the Month” competition. An “Artwork of
the Year” award is given to a work chosen by members from among the monthly
winners.
Various media are explored and shown by members, including oil, acrylics,
pastel, gouache, watercolor, graphics, photography, collage, mixed media and
others. Two juried exhibits are held each year, one at the Barnwell Garden and
Art Center and the other at the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum. The Shreveport Art
Club is the only local group to have an annual show at that venue. In addition,
the group hangs one or more non-judged shows at college and public libraries
every year.
