Dr. H.B. Wright, Curator of the Louisiana Exhibit Museum, Sidney
Hoover, Lewis Sicard, and Irene Wright organized the Hoover Watercolor Society,
originally known as the Shreveport Watercolor Society, in 1958. They saw a need
to provide a means of exhibition as a stimulus toward quality artwork, as well
as to educate and increase the interest of the public in fine watercolor art.
Hoover Watercolor Society, Inc. is a private, non-profit organization.
Private and corporate donations, as well as members’ dues, help to fund
programs. These programs include exhibitions, films, educational art
demonstrations, workshops, the member-artist award programs and support for ARTBREAK. A volunteer executive board of five officers and nine committee
chairmen governs the Society. The Board meets at noon the first Thursday of each
month, except July and August, in the Wafer Gallery at the Barnwell.
Programs include three judged exhibitions: the Annual Spring Juried Show at
the Barnwell Garden and Art Center in Shreveport, the Juried Small Painting Show
in the fall at the American Rose Center in Shreveport and the Membership Show at
East Bank Gallery in Bossier City. Other activities include workshops and
demonstrations by nationally known artists, occasional plein aire painting
opportunities and an annual Christmas party and painting exchange.
Membership is open to all artists and non-artists over 18 years of age who
have an interest in watercolor painting. Annual dues of $30 are due in January
and include a bimonthly newsletter.
