"HOT JAZZ ON THE RED” TO HEAT UP THE SHREVEPORT RIVERFRONT
FOR THE THIRD YEAR
at the BARNWELL GARDEN AND ART CENTER

Summer is fast approaching but its going to get hot on the Shreveport
riverfront long before summer peaks when Eldorado Resort Casino Shreveport and
the Friends of Barnwell present the third annual “Hot Jazz on the Red”
Summer Concert Series. Bring your lawn chair and blanket or enjoy the pre-set
tables as you relax on the patio of the Barnwell Garden & Art Center to the
sounds of jazz performed by the finest musicians from the Ark-La-Tex. Residents
and visitors of the tri-state area can look forward to a weekly showcase of the
area’s extraordinary talent of jazz musicians. “Hot Jazz on the Red” has
expanded its concert offerings to nine free public concerts and a special Red
Hot & Jazzed Fourth of July Concert for members. The series will run on
consecutive Thursdays May 1-June 26 from 6:00 -8:00 pm.
“Hot Jazz on the Red” offers smooth jazz that is sometimes combined with
a touch of the blues in a mixture of music that is both soulful and soothing.
The Jazz Series plays an important role in promoting jazz, introducing new
talent, and helping to keep jazz music fresh and alive. “Hot Jazz on the Red”
provides an opportunity for different generations of musicians and audiences
to come together.
The schedule for the 2008 Series is as follows:

The Friends of the Barnwell is adding a special workshop to this year’s
series. On May 29th the John Adams Trio from Dallas, Texas will present a, “How
to Listen to Jazz” workshop before their concert at 6:00. This interactive
workshop is scheduled from 2-4 and is open to the public. “This is a great
opportunity for the many jazz enthusiasts, in the area to gain a greater
appreciation for jazz,” said Freda Powell, Executive Director. “The workshop is
interactive and we invite intermediate, advance, and professional musicians to
bring their instruments to participate in the demo. You can enjoy the workshop
as either an observer or a participant”, Powell stated. The John Adams Trio
performance and workshop is sponsored by a grant through the Louisiana Division
of the Arts’ Decentralized Arts Fund Program that is administered by the
Shreveport Regional Arts Council.
Bring a picnic basket and the Friends will offer a cash bar that also
serves non-alcoholic beverages. “One thing is for certain”, said Powell, “You’ll
hear some of the hottest music performed by some of the coolest professional
musicians in our area. The concerts are going to be great because these
musicians love playing to crowds that loves jazz!”
“Hot Jazz on the Red” is sponsored by Eldorado Resort Casino -
Shreveport, the City of Shreveport and KSLA TV 12. “Hot Jazz on the Red” is also
supported by a grant from the Louisiana State Arts Council, the Louisiana
Division of the Arts, Office of Culture Recreation and Tourism, and the
Shreveport Regional Arts Council.
The hours of the Barnwell Garden and Art Center are Tuesday through
Friday 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; and Sunday
from 1:00 p.m. 5:00 p.m. The Barnwell will stay open from 10:00 am – 8:30 p.m.
on concert dates. Admission to the Barnwell Center and “Hot Jazz on the Red”
is free. The Barnwell Center is located at 601 Clyde Fant Parkway, adjacent to
Riverview Park and next to Eldorado Resort Casino.
